The regional shoreline evolution modeling and geographic information systems (GIS)-based economic analyses, which are used for economic options appraisal, are discussed in relation to shore protection of North Norfolk coast. This integrated study facilitated the development of solutions to local coastal defence problems within the context of longer term, sustainable regional strategy. GIS-based economic analysis provided support options appraisal at a regional level. The study provided an understanding of the regional geomorphology and cliff recession processes, and recognition of the unique coastal cliff environment.
